Origin[edit | edit source]
“First Hand Experience In Second Hand Love” is one of the songs written by musical composer and record producer Giorgio Moroder with songwriter Pete Bellotte for Moroder's 1977 studio album From Here To Eternity. This album, along with Moroder's works with singer Donna Summer in the late 70s, became highly influential with his use of electronic instruments and synthesizers in a disco genre.
Both Marc Almond and Dave Ball stated the music of Moroder and Summer has influenced their interest in electronic music significantly,[1][2] and they always wanted to cover one of Moroder's song as a tribute.[3]
Record and release[edit | edit source]
Almond and Ball initially covered the song while working on Cruelty Without Beauty studio album with producer Ingo Vauk, but the recording was lost and never released.[2][3]
At some point during or after the recording of Soft cell's next studio album, *Happiness Not Included, Almond suggested to cover “First Hand Experience In Second Hand Love” again. Ball recorded the music with co-producer Rick Mulhall in his studio, while Almond recorded vocals separately. The vocoder backing vocals were done by producer Philip Larsen as Ball couldn't attend the session.[3]
In the end the song was included on compilation of bonus material to accompany *Happiness Not Included, called *Happiness Now Completed. Its release is scheduled for 28 July.
