Origin[edit | edit source]
“Nighthawks” was written by Dave Ball in 2019, specially for limited Deluxe box set edition of his book Electronic Boy.[1] It was inspired by famous 1942 painting of the same name, Nighthawks, by American painter Edward Hopper, which remaindered Ball of loneliness and isolation.[2]
Record and release[edit | edit source]
“Nighthawks” was recorded in Ball's home studio with sequencer MIDI parts done in Warner Brothers studio.[2] The track appears on two releases within Electronic Boy box set: as B-side of 7″ EP and as final track of CD compilation 1979–2019 (with hidden bonus track).
Other versions[edit | edit source]
The song was rerecorded, with lyrics and vocals by Marc Almond and featuring drag performance artist CHRISTEENE, for Soft Cell studio album *Happiness Not Included, released in 2022.
