Soft Cell are an English electronic music duo, formed in Leeds in 1978, by vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball. Their debut record was self-produced EPMutant Moments released in 1980, which brought attention of their future manager Stevo, who soon after gave them bigger public exposure with Some Bizzare Albumcompilation in 1981.
Soft Cell gained world-wide success with their second singleTainted Love, which got to high chart positions in 1981 and 1982 across 17 countries. The following debut studio albumNon-Stop Erotic Cabaret will put the duo on serious pop stardom. Since 1981 and until their first disband in 1984, Soft Cell released 3 studio albums, 2 mini-albums and 12 singles, all on Some Bizzare label with Phonogram Records.
In 2000 Soft Cell reunited and released 4th studio album in 2002, accompanied by 2 singles and later followed by duo's first live album in 2003. At the same time a remix single and a “best of” compilation were released.
2004 marked second disband of Soft Cell, which ended by 2017, towards duo's 40th anniversary in 2018. That year saw the release of definitive box set release, new single, new compilation of singles, several new tracks and an one-off “final” concert. The recording of the show followed in 2019 in variety of formats and new studio EP.
In the separation time a variety of singles and compilations were released, which included re-recorded tracks, remixes and demos.
Since 2019 Ball and Almond been mentioning that they are working on new, 5th studio album, which eventually was released in May 2022 as *Happiness Not Included.
